ONGOING EVENTS

AROUND THE WORLD SERVICE MONTH

November 2021 is a service month for D34S! The division has several service projects lined up for you this month, all centering around the theme of “Around the World”. There will be a service opportunity every weekend in November for you to participate in; two ongoing service opportunities are listed below the visuals. Some of the events include: writing letters to people across the world, participating in UNICEF’s Math for Good challenge, and enjoying a Squid Games themed bonding event at the end of the month

Look out for more emails about these events (join the division email list HERE for division updates), and we will see you at all of these events!

  • Letters to Strangers

Letters to Strangers is a global youth-run nonprofit seeking to destigmatize mental illness and increase access to affordable, quality treatment for youth aged 13 to 24. Through the process of writing letters to strangers and receiving letters from strangers, Letters to Strangers hopes members can anonymously explore their vulnerabilities and insights with each other. They believe that we can create heartfelt connections and foster empathy, one letter at a time.

For this service event, you can use this link: https://www.letterstostrangers.org/submit-letter

You will need to sign up on the website. Read the sample letters, read the letter guidelines, and submit your letter! Letters to Strangers follows a “message in a bottle” format, rather than a “pen-pal” format. Once you send a letter, you will also receive one from an anonymous person from somewhere in the world.

Please remember to upload proof of your service to http://tinyurl.com/34sletters21. This event is a month-long event and can be completed any time in November.

  • UNICEF Letters to Congress

Send digital messages to your Senators and Representatives to advocate for different topics on behalf of UNICEF. This includes fighting for girls' education, prioritizing mental health, etc.

For this service event, you can use this link: https://www.unicefusa.org/help/advocate

Choose a cause and take action! Although an email template is given for you, we highly recommend that you change the format of the email so that your email does not go to spam or trash when received.

Please remember to upload proof of your service to http://tinyurl.com/34sletters21. This event is a month-long event and can be completed any time in November.

MV CARES

MV Cares is a program to provide holiday baskets for MVHS families in need; we will create a Amazon Gift list for a designated family, then buy and package the items on the gift list to be delivered to the family. In the past, the program has impacted over 100 families; more details will come out later this week, so make sure to look out for another email!

CHARITY MILES

Submit screenshots of your finished Charity Miles session to the form linked HERE - make sure to screenshot your time before you press finish - some people have mentioned that their times are not recorded after pressing finish.

SECOND HARVEST FOODBANK

Help sort or distribute food with Second Harvest by signing up to volunteer at a shift, and feel free to sign up for multiple!

REGISTRATION:

     1. Go to the volunteer signup page HERE. You will be signing up as an individual (as opposed to a group), and all events will be categorized as "events for individuals." You will most likely be volunteering with other volunteers from the Bay Area.

     2. Choose from one of the two service options at the top: sort food in the Second Harvest warehouse, or distribute food to the community.

     3. Search for upcoming events using the filters on the left to sort by your age range, dates, locations, job type, etc. You can also change the viewing format to map or calendar view.

     4. Once you find a shift/shifts you're interested in, select it and click on "Sign Up," then fill out your information. If you want to volunteer with a friend, member, and/or an officer, let them know and you can sign up for the same shift.

     5. Fill out our form HERE for us to keep track of your service hours, as we cannot see what shifts you have signed up for through Second Harvest otherwise.

6. Mark your calendars, and don't forget to attend your shift! Be sure you have permission from a parent/guardian.
